Fortnite is one of the most popular games in the battle royale genre and is currently available for a multitude of devices ranging from smartphones to dedicated gaming consoles.
The visuals in Fortnite may not be up to everyone’s alley, but there’s no denying that they look good. You won’t find objects sticking out at awkward angles or half-baked animations that sometimes feel like a glitch rather than a dedicated feature. The cartoonish style makes the game feel a lot less violent than it actually is, which is a good thing given how many kids play Fortnite. In a way, the fun, colorful graphics also shift focus from mindless violence to strategic actions and planning, adding another degree of depth to the gameplay.
The main purpose of every Fortnite match is to be “the last one standing”, which is quite challenging given that there are normally between 90 and 100 players in a single match. However, thanks to the diverse environment with lots of places to explore as well as the building mode, Fortnite allows a lot of room for experimentation when it comes to your preferred strategy. You can choose to hide and loot quietly, rush head first into battle, or find your own unique way of playing that sits somewhere between these extremes. Of course, the game makes sure that you can’t stay at your hiding place indefinitely, forcing all players to stay inside a safe circle that is progressively getting smaller. So, choose your strategy wisely, and don’t hesitate to try out new tactics!
The controls in Fortnite have always been pretty good, making it easy to move and interact with your environment in the exact way you intended to. However, they are not very intuitive, and you will likely need some time to get good at building mode. This is understandable given the complexity of the actions you can perform, but could still make your first experiences with Fortnite quite frustrating.
Replay Value 4/5
Thanks to the fact that Epic Games keeps adding new content to the game, Fortnite is slowly evolving and always has something exciting in-store, even for regular players. Of course, the core premise of the game remains the same, so you may end up being bored with Fortnite despite all the tweaks and changes. Given that the game is free, this shouldn’t be much of an issue.
The Bottom Line
Fortnite is a solid battle royale game that can be a good introduction to the genre or a fun way to switch things up if you’re tired of playing Apex Legends and still don’t get what all the fuss around Overwatch was about. The combat system may not be the best, but Epic Games’ efforts to create a fun, dynamic world definitely make Fortnite checking out.
