Secret Neighbor Review: Who Do You Trust?

Secret Neighbor is a fun, albeit slightly creepy, horror game that you can play with your friends. Currently, Secret Neighbor is only available on PC and Xbox One, although future releases for other platforms are possible.

Graphics 5/5

The visuals in Secret Neighbor are quite realistic, yet have the cartoonish touch to them that makes the game look more fun (and in some cases, more terrifying) all at the same time. This style may not be what you’d expect from a horror game, as you could easily mistake Secret Neighbor for a child-friendly game at first glance. However, don’t let the bright colors and happy faces fool you - once the rooms get dark, the creepy atmosphere sets in, making you feel uneasy and apprehensive.

Gameplay 5/5

If you’re a fan of the horror genre, you may instantly recognize the idea behind Secret Neighbor in games like Friday the 13th. Indeed, there are lots of similar gameplay elements between the two games, but Secret Neighbor has a trick up its sleeve. Unlike Friday the 13th or Dead by Daylight, Secret Neighbor doesn’t let you know who’s the villain from the get-go. This way, you end up roaming the house with 5 other players, one of whom is actually a traitor. Depending on how skilled the “Neighbor” in disguise is, it may take a while to figure out that he or she is not trustworthy. Of course, this also means that you can’t trust anyone at the beginning of the game, adding more tension and suspense into the gameplay. Once you’re tired of trying to grab the keys and escape, you can play as the Neighbor and experience the game in a very different way.

Controls 4/5

The gameplay controls in Secret Neighbor are precise and fluid, so you shouldn’t have any trouble interacting with your environment once you get used to them. The control scheme is pretty basic and intuitive, which is probably the reason why Secret Neighbor developers decided not to offer a tutorial or even a basic explanation. As a result, new players have to figure out the controls on their own, which may be a little confusing for those who don’t have any experience with other games in the genre.

Replay Value 5/5

Thanks to the fact that Secret Neighbor offers a multiplayer mode as well as custom game modes, it’ll probably take a while for you to get bored with the game. Since different characters have different strengths and abilities, you can always make the game feel fresh and challenging again by playing as one of your least favorite characters.

The Bootom Line

Secret Neighbor took a familiar horror game concept and brought an exciting twist to it, making you guess who your friends and enemies are. Combined with atmospheric graphics and great sound effects, this results in a fun game that can be replayed a lot of times before it loses its appeal.
